New Site Announcement: Over the past several years, the METS team has been building a new website and new digital edition, in collaboration with Cast Iron Coding. This next phase of METS' editions includes improved functionality and accessibility, an increased focus on transparency, and conformity to best practices for open access and digital editions, including TEI markup. We are currently in a "soft launch" phase in which we will monitor the new site for bugs and errors. We will continue to publish all new editions in print and online, but our new online editions will include TEI/XML markup and other features. Over the next two years, we will be working on updating our legacy volumes to conform to our new standards.

5–6 The beheadings of Elijah and John the Baptist are implicitly connected. Taken up to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11–12), Elijah returned in the person of John the Baptist, according to prophecy (Malachi 4:5–6) and Gospel (Matthew 11:14, 17:9–13; Mark 9:11–13; and Luke 1:17). Compare the explanatory notes for Pilgrimages in the Holy Land (art. 38), where sites highlighted by the author are frequently places associated with the biblical stories of Elijah and John the Baptist. The Life of Saint John the Baptist (art. 5) appears in MS Harley 2253, fols. 43vb–45vb, in the hand of Scribe A.
