Introduction
In the mid 1980s, when several other research projects were completed, I was asked to offer an interdisciplinary course in King Arthur. To be included were archaeology (about which I knew little from practical experience), history, literature (in which an undergraduate major and my colleagues helped with discussions and teaching) music, and the arts. It was then that I first found Michael Hurd's book, Immortal Hour, an intellectual biography of the neglected English composer, Rutland Boughton. Researching for the course in the Library of Congress, I had come across the printed libretto for Uther and Igraine, written by Reginald Buckley with an introductory tract by Boughton. The reading of Hurd's book pointed me first to Boughton's five choral drama cycle on King Arthur, although I did not tumble to his many songs and two other of his music dramas, Bethlehem and The Queen of Cornwall, until later. I began to wonder, "How many more Arthurian music dramas are lying around 'out there' and what is an Arthurian opera anyway?" The question grew to "How much Arthurian music is there?"After all, Wagner's Tristan und Isolde does not mention King Arthur, the Round Table, or any of the other knights. I would later find, however, that Wagner had considered a brief appearance by Parsifal in the third act. Parsifal mentions Gawain and Lohengrin cites Parsifal. I decided that was good enough, and with that a quest began. In addition, I later learned that Wagner considered an opera on the Erec and Enid Arthurian tale.
The result is this list. It includes several categories. First are listed the music drama works whose scores or libretti I have examined, or I have read sufficient comments to be sure the works are "Arthurian." These include operas, operettas, singspiels, musical comedies, and semi-operas. An occasional oratorio that has been staged as an opera is included. The presence of an "Arthurian" character functioning in the story is sufficient to class a work in the first list. When I have not found publication information confirming the work, I have listed the source, whose complete title is in a very brief bibliography. I cannot claim that this list is complete and would appreciate any additions or suggestions for deletion.
A second group includes masques and incidental music for staged dramas. There are not many of these, but several major composers have written for this genre.
The third group, "the Celtic themes", include works such as the "Amadis" operas or Lalo's "Le Roi d'Ys". No Arthurian characters such as Merlin or Gawain figure in the text, but the theme is "Arthuriana." Occasionally, this list includes compositions that directly reference an Arthurian figure. An example of this is Antonio Vivaldi's Orlando Furioso with its final act reference to the entombed Merlin even though the Orlando operas belong to the world of Roland not Arthur.
Fourth, I have compiled a list of choral, vocal, instrumental music for a variety of purposes relating to the legend. This list is long. These have been gathered "incidentally" while rummaging through catalogs and hand lists for the other works. While I hope lists one to three are reasonably complete, I make no claim for list four. Please contact me about any errors and omissions.
Fifth, there are works still not located whose titles suggest a possible Arthurian connection. Any information about these will be most appreciated.
Lastly, I have listed works from which a citation was drawn if I have not been able to locate a repository or publisher.
It is my hope that I will at a later date discuss the intellectual and historical significance of these works in a follow-up volume. The works are arranged by composer with works by unknown composers coming first. Certainly, some of these works have never had composers, although they were written as libretti, so they float in a strange world of half sound. Beyond the acknowledgments that follow this section, I owe much to many people, some of whom have now died.
My parents bore the greatest "blame" for my New Orleans upbringing surrounded by King Arthur, opera, and Tulane football. My opera tastes were broadened by my "Dutch aunt and uncle," Lonie and Frank Lewis, Dad's close friend. At Tulane, I attended Robert Lumiansky's lectures on Chaucer and thankfully had the chance to be with him when he received an honorary doctorate from Clemson University. Charles Moorman, the well-known Arthurian scholar, Claude Fike, and Treadwell Davis were literary and historical mentors at Southern Mississippi. At Emory, George Peddy Cuttino, my major professor, led long hours of discussion at his home in Atlanta, sometimes touching on the use of Arthur by Edwards I, III, and IV. His Emory colleague, Francis Benjamin, put me through my paces on Latin and intellectual history, raising Chrétien de Troyes, Gottfried von Strasbourg, Thomas the Briton, and Wolfram von Eschenbach in my mind. He was also the near perfect Wagnerite, whose discourses on Tristan were intriguing.
All that said, my three children and our friends know that this is as much my wife's work as mine. A librarian by education and a first-rate researcher, she has spent great amounts of time at the Clemson University libraries, the libraries of the Universities of Georgia and South Carolina, California, Harvard, Brown, the British Library, and the Library of Congress, the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music patiently searching through hand-lists, card files, and databases.
