The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer: Done into Modern English Verse
Additional Information:
Szyk created full-page pilgrim portraits for the Knight, the Miller, the Reeve, the Cook, the Lawyer, the Seaman, Chaucer, the Monk, the Nun’s Priest, the Physician, the Pardoner, the Wife of Bath, the Friar, the Summoner, the Student (Clerk), the Merchant, the Squire, the Franklin, the Second Nun, the Canon’s Yeoman, the Manciple, and the Parson. The only pilgrim not included is the Prioress.
Each image shows the pilgrim in isolation on a cream background, and the images are presented separately from the text, on glossy pages. The colors are slightly muted but include a range of reds, yellows, greens, and purples. While each pilgrim is labeled, the images usually include some identifying element, such as depicting the cook holding a spoon.
