Canterbury Tales: The Illustrated Prologue
by: Michael Alexander (Editor)
Additional Information:
This short work is heavily illustrated throughout with images taken primarily from manuscript sources. The volume includes images from the Ellesmere Manuscript (particularly the pilgrim portraits); Tres Heures Riches du Duc de Berry; Stothard’s Canterbury Pilgrims; and stained glass from Canterbury cathedral. The volume also includes the famous Chaucer portrait from Hoccleve’s Regiment of Princes. Many of the manuscript images do not identify their source, though the owning libraries are thanked on the back portion of the title page. The volume includes more or less one page of text for each two pages, clearly prioritizing the images. The pages themselves are designed to look like MS pages, cream-colored with faint marbling; the text itself is drawn from Benson’s Riverside Chaucer.
